Laughter – The Greatest Secret I Know

Throughout my life, I have been so blessed to hang around with, meet, study, get-to-know and even work with some of the funniest people whom have ever lived. People like Marty Allen from TV’s Hollywood Squares, The great Jerry Lewis, The hilarious Max Alexander, The devastatingly funny Don Rickels, Robin Williams, Red Fox and so many more… These great comedy masters have so much to teach us all. Not just about laughter but about the greatest secret I have ever learned.
Being around these great masters of laughter, I watched and learned. Soon I stumbled onto something. I couldn’t believe it! A secret hidden deep within the jokes and funny stories they told. A common thread that tied them all together. I couldn’t believe just how powerful their gift truly was.
I could see the instant affect this secret would have on anyone who came close enough to simply listen. I have seen them transform a “difficult” audience, lost in thought before the show, into a group of hysterical humans without a care in the world.
Now that’s true power.
The secret lies in what happens to us when we laugh. I kept saying… “wow, more people need to understand this?” It’s a complete physical change. Each audience member goes into that show one person and comes out a completely different, more relaxed, more enjoyable and pleasant person to be around. To me, it’s one of those most amazing things I have ever witnessed.
Though I have always done a lot of comedy in my shows, when I am on stage it’s hard (even impossible) to sit back and gather the “big picture”. Just listen to the audience howling with laughter during my snake basket routine on my promo video:
Because I am up there working so hard, I never realized what was really going on prior to this discovery.
It always amazed me how laughter can change a person. Did you know that it’s actually impossible to be depressed and laughing at the same time? You can’t do it. When you laugh, it creates a physiological change in the chemistry of our bodies. Certain chemicals are released and a positive chain reaction occurs. Laughter can be healing. I know of cancer patients who have spent their entire treatment focused on laughter and have actually healed themselves. The power of laughter, the power of feeling good is real. Not to be dismissed or taken lightly.
Stress researchers have shown in the labs that laughing, which has been scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, tension and stress can make you between 1.7 and 8 years younger.
Airplane! (Don’t Call Me Shirley! Edition)
Airplane, one of the all time
funniest movies EVER! I
scream with laughter every time
I see it and I know every line!
It’s scientific FACT!
The great comedy masters were really great masters at relieving stress and anxiety without ever knowing it. Their gift was far bigger then even they could imagine. Laughter is one of the greatest secrets I have ever discovered. I love to laugh and I spend as much time doing it and seeking it out as I possibly can. I visit comedy clubs every where I go. I go see funny movies, I hang around funny people and as a result, not only will I live longer – but happier as well.
The power of laughter can work for you too. If you’ll just giggle a little more each day. Try it!
