Am I happy?

I have spent many years researching happiness. What is it? How does it come to be? Why aren’t we all happy? Aren’t we each born that way? What happens in between then and now? What I am getting at is that none of us actually wake up in the morning and sit on the edge of our beds and try and figure out how to have the most miserable day possible. Which would lead me to believe that we each have an innate deep seeded desire to be happy.

However, happiness is such a vague word. The word itself never really satisfied my desire to know what it is. Most people when embarking on a search for happiness begin their search by looking to the outside. They look for “what” will make them happy. “Who” will make them happy. They search for security falsely believing that the arm of another person next to them will provide them happiness. We believe that if somehow we were able to “gather” the right combination of “things” that we could find happiness in that. Not realizing that we are actually dooming ourselves before we even begin to fail in our quest.

Happiness is not a thing. This I know for sure.

We sometimes try to find happiness in control. We feel that if we control the situation, people, or events in our lives we will be happy. But then we sadly discover that doesn’t work either, often when it’s far to late. I know many people who have spent their entire lives working hard to become multimillionaires only to discover that their money, the big house and the fancy cars simply don’t fulfill that void within.

So what is happiness? How do we achieve this often illusive state?

I want to know your thoughts. Please post a comment below and tell me what happiness means to you.

I will be writing more about happiness over the coming months and I would love to include your thoughts, ideas and experiences.

Positive psychology & the study of happiness is a great set of ideas with good research behind it. Too bad more people don’t know about it…

What makes me happy is being loved and being able to pay my bills

We often hear that money doesn’t buy happiness. But everybody wants to find out for themselves! (Zig Ziglar)

Thank you for sharing this presentation!

Discovering what is happiness and what makes us happy is the key to living a successful life. Coca-Cola launched recently the Expedition 206. It started January 2010, three happiness ambassadors began an unprecedented journey to all 206 countries where Coca-Cola is sold. Their mission is to seek out “what makes people happy” around the world.

Happiness is contagious! I hope that you find happiness in your life and share it with the world!

  4. Hi Bruno… I visited your blog and found it very interesting. I didn’t know about the Coca-Cola expedition 206. Very interesting as well. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and this information. I love people who aren’t afraid to speak their mind. After reading a bit on your blog… you certainly are not. I am also a strong believer in the power of sharing knowledge. By the way… I once met Marylin Manson and actually had a decent conversation with him and I would have to say that you are indeed correct in your assessment of his work. Genius.
Thank you for your honest comments.

    Wow Steven!

I’m really glad that you’ve found my blog useful and interesting!

My mission is to use my creativity to look at the world in a new way, learn important lessons and share them with everyone. I believe that together we can make a difference and change the World! So, after your kind comment I can say: mission accomplished! :D

As far as you blog is concerned: I will definitely come back to learn and open my mind to exciting new things that can make a difference.
Just like this post. In this fast paced and extremely competitive business world, is easy to forget to ask really important questions like: what makes us happy? This can be a competitive advantage if you ask your costumers what makes them happy and deliver it.

I am speechless. This is usually a exceptional blog and well done. Fantastic function! That is not genuinely significantly coming from an novice publisher like me, but it’s all I could say soon after diving into your posts. Wonderful, rich content. As opposed to other weblogs that bore me. You actually know what you’re speaking about as well. A lot that you simply inspired me to start one of my own. Your blog has turn out to be a stepping stone for me, my fellow blogger. Thanks for the comprehensive trip. I really enjoyed the new video posts you are doing this year.
