Are you depressed?

Do you feel down?

Did you know that: 25 percent of adults will have a major depressive episode at some point?

It’s just a part of life. It’s  human nature.

However, most people don’t realize that depression is bad for your heart health, memory and more.
With all of the economic troubles in the world today, sadly TV commercials for every antidepressant known to man have become a part of our modern culture. In a recent study, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at 2.4 billion drugs prescribed in visits to doctors and hospitals in 2005.

Of those, 118 million were for antidepressants.

Why?

Because it’s easy to pop a pill. However, that pill won’t solve all your troubles. At some point, the pill bottle may run dry. Then what?

According to a government study, antidepressants have become the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States. They’re prescribed more than drugs to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, or headaches. Doctors routinely medicate “unhappiness”. It happens thousands of times each day needlessly. Even so, over 70% of America’s 15 million depressed women, men and children get no help for their condition.

The question then becomes, “How does one know if they are truly depressed?”

Well believe it or not, there is a very simple two step self quiz you can take to help you figure things out.

Researchers from the University of Auckland, in New Zealand discovered that by asking two very simple questions, they could spot true depression about 97% of the time. The quiz isn’t perfect; like any other depression screening test. However, it can be used to give yourself a good idea if you are truly depressed or just a little down in the dumps. Experts suggest it be used as a great conversation starter with your doctor.

QUESTION #1

During the past month, have you often been bothered by feeling down, depressed, or hopeless?

QUESTION #2

During the past month, have you often been bothered by having little interest or pleasure in doing things?

THE ANSWERS:
