Diana Lewis Jewell has been called everything from “the guru of gray hair,” to “Moses leading us out of the wilderness of hair coloring” as the author of Going Gray, Looking Great!, the first book of its kind for women considering letting their silver shine.
The Former Marketing Director of Vogue Magazine and Promotion Director of Seventeen, In early 2008, she founded www.goinggraylookinggreat.com, dedicated to women even thinking about going natural. Here, she dispenses advice daily, helping women go through the dreaded transitioning process, select the right makeup and wardrobe for their newly silvered locks, consider coloring procedures or haircare products that might boost or enhance their gray, and, indeed decide if going gray is right for them.
The website has fostered a strong, supportive community, is logged into in 80 countries around the world, and has an active Membership chatting daily on its pages.
She points out that “going natural” is a megatrend not envisioned at the time she wrote the book. “We’re now seeing two generations embracing authenticity, both boomers and Gen-Xers,” she says, “and it has to do with so many factors beyond a simple decision to stop coloring.”

thanks for the show .. i really enjoyed the “conversation” between you both!
Hi Louann,
Thank you for listening! Diana was a hoot wasn’t she? I just love having guests like her on. It was great fun and I hope she enjoyed it as much as I did.
Steven
You bet I did, Steven! I think we covered some very interesting points. The girls back on the site are all talking about it.
Hi Steven, What a great interview…thank you so much! I’m one of Diana’s “silver sisters” and would have loved to have called in but I was in the car on the way home from the beach. We are all talking about you over at GoingGrayLookingGreat.com and saying that your interview with Diana should have been on the Today show! Your questions were insightful and thought-provoking and they let Diana shine along with her gorgeous gray locks! And it was very interesting listening to your hair journey and hearing your perspective on the whole gray revolution. Thanks again for helping to spread the gray word!
Thanks for giving this topic your time, Steven. Every bit we can do to un-brainwash our culture is a great service to society. I’m 40 and about 4 months into going gray. People need courage to be themselves; they need to feel they will be supported. Thanks for your work!
Loved the interview with Diana Jewell. She is so right that growing out one’s natural gray hair is freeing. Better yet, it is an adventure that continues long after one has completed the transition. Her advice and the support of the Silver Sisters makes what for some is a difficult time instead something that is fun and exciting. Thank you.
Nadine, Thank you so much, even though I have NO HAIR, can I be an honorary “silver sister”? I am starting to feel like I want to belong to such a loving and supportive community! I had a blast talking with Diana and I hope to stay in touch with her and all of you strong, courageous women! Be fearless!!
Yay Grey!!
Marllyn, what a pleasure it was for me to help “Un-brainwash” the culture. That’s what my site is all about. Giving people the courage to just be themselves, whatever and whomever that maybe! Go Grey!! (I think it’s my new favorite color!)
Keep in touch… Let me know how goes the journey.
Warm regards,
Steven
Thanks, Steven, for a great show and a vote of confidence for us silver sisters. We love Diana and all that she stands for. Good for you, too, for embracing your authentic self.
Thank you Aziza, Please help share this broadcast across your social networks to help spread the word! Embracing your authentic self is my message!
Love you all!
SD
Loved, loved the interview!! I wish I could have phoned in with this comment but unfortunately wasn’t able to, in fact, I just listened to it this morning. I am literally “beaming” with pride to belong to Going Gray Looking Great. Diana is the best, we all love and admire her so much! Steven, I love your look……I am trying to convince my husband to shave off the little hair he has left, just can’t seem to convince him how “hip” it would look.
Lulubell,
Tell your husband to set his head FREE! My dad always told me that one day I would come out on top… however this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind! But now that I am clean shaven I would NEVER go back again.
Thank you so much for listening to the show. I hope you will continue to listen and visit us here as well. All the best, Steven
Steven,
Thank you so much for your interview with Diana. You allowed her to say all the things that need to be said about going gray. It was nice to have a positive media experience about being gray. I had my last highlights at Halloween and I am almost there. It is a “grayt” journey and is very nice in this stressful world not to worry about roots. I know I could have never done it without Diana and her website. Having her on your show may be just what another soon to be silver sister is looking for.
I’m sure Diana would let you be a silver sister if you want to be but I think you should be in her section of cool guys!
Hi Steven! Thanks so much for having Diana on your show. Her wisdom and insights have emboldened many of us to wear our silver hair proudly. Cultural attitudes are gradually changing toward those who choose to give up the bottle (of dye). It takes a bit of fortitude to get through the transition, risking “you look 10 years older” and the self-consciousness that comes with flaunting formerly dreaded gray roots. It’s wonderful to have Diana’s on-line support group 24/7. What a terrific and candid group of women, with Diana a frequent contributor/mentor.
I’m sure that when you chose to shave your head, a la Phil Collins, you experienced the same challenges of self-perception we go through in the graying process. A very daring move, but your it suits you well! Perhaps you should start a web site for men who give up the Rogaine!
Chrysalis,
I am proud of you for being brave enough to be YOU! I would love to be in the “Cool Guys” section but I don’t think I have enough hair to qualify!
Maybe I’ll take a close up of my graying goatee and submit it.
We are going to have Diana back again and this time I hope we get to hear from some of you callers!!
Be well.
Steven
Steven, Thank you for your wonderful and insightful questions and comments for the amazing Diana Jewell. I am a Newbie on Going Gray Looking Great’s website and am 6 months into transitioning. Never could I have undertaken this journey without the love, advice and support of the other silver sisters, both those who have graduated to glorious gray locks and those who are transitioning. Diana is a breath of fresh air in our “look young at any cost” society. She is authentic, bold, witty and grayt – not to mention gorgeous! All the silver sisters really appreciate your open and respectful approach to learning about the whole process of going gray. As we say on GGLG, “Shine on!”
Great show, Steven. Thanks for giving Diana the chance to tell the world how great it is to be gray.Diana, you were super as usual representing our silver sisterhood.I enjoyed the conversation very much.
Thank you so much Carol Anne! I hope you’ll tune in again sometime.
Dear Amy, I’m shining just as hard as I can. Which isn’t hard to do when light reflects off your bald head! I really did have a great time and I hope to cover more topics like this one in the future.
Any suggestions?
I’d love to hear them.
Be well.
Steven
Wavesofgray,
“…those who choose to give up the bottle… (of dye)”… just about made me pee in my pants! Now that was funny! But then I read the “a la Phil Collins” and “Perhaps you should start a web site for men who give up the Rogaine!” !! I think I tinkled in my undies just a bit I was laughing so hard. You are a crack up…I wish you had called in yesterday. What fun. You girls are really keeping a smile on my face today! I’ll give “The Blad Truth” website idea some thought. LOL Thanks for the laughs.
Steven
Fantastic show! Thank you for having Diana on — she is a “grayt” person who offers so much encouragement for anybody thinking about freedom from hair dye. I’m proud to be one of the “silver sisters”.
Steven…enjoyed hearing Diana, her wit and charm came through as it does on the website. I am in the process of going cold turkey…seven months of not reaching for the bottle and could NOT have done it without the GGLG website and all the support of Diana and the friends I have made on the website.
What a wonderful subject and interview. Rather than seeing growing older (gray, bald, laugh lines etc.) as an affliction or disease we must somehow cure or hide, it is time we celebrate and embrace the wisdom, beauty and confidence that comes with age and experience.
Steven
Thank you for the entertaining and insightful interview. GGLG sisters are a Gray’t family of women. They offer support for many of the bumps and lumps that come with going against the “grayn” coverup. Keep Shining!
Many Thanks,
Jen
Hi Jen,
It was my pleasure. Thank you for the support!
Steven
Here Here – Whiteone!! I couldn’t agree more!
Very well said.
Thanks for stopping bye.
Warm regards,
Steven
Linda,
I can only hope to someday have the loving and supportive community that Diana has built. Stay away from those bottles! Your almost home free!
I hope you’ll keep me up to date on your progress.
Be well…
Steven
Shimmer,
Diana is a “GRAYT” person. Very inspiring to me as well. Has anyone done a cost analysis to see how much money you girls are saving each year by setting yourself free?
Let me know if you find out.
Warm hugs,
Steven
Hi Steven:
I know I am saving $800 a year. Although this is probably being spent on new makeup and clothes to go with my new color palette. Fun, fun, fun! And . . . no nasty chemical reactions!
Shimmer,
Money put to better use is money well spent! Plus, what price could you put on being happier in the process? Know what I mean?
Hugs,
Steven
Oh, I’d love to chime in on this! As a “salon gal,” it was about $250/month, plus 3x a year for highlights, which added another $150 to the cost. I tell ya. . .And this went on for years! Never figured out the grand total because I guess I didn’t really want to! Just thought it was the price of “beauty.” I agree with Shimmer, it’s far more fun to spend that on clothing and cosmetics!
Great interview, Steven and Diana!
I am salt and pepper, 58 and married for 33+ years. I started my gradual transition a decade ago, way before finding GGLG. But, then found Diana’s book and the website. It’s so much fun to chat with and see women gettin’ their gray on.
As for looking older, I do … because I AM older.
So, now I have money to spend on the finer things in life, a scalp that doesn’t burn, my hair has thickened up and I have time to spend doing things that I enjoy.
BALD IS BEAUTIFUL AND GRAY IS GREAT!
Barbara
Barbara,
So very true! “BALD IS BEAUTIFUL AND GRAY IS GREAT! ” makes me want to buy a gray wig! You girls are so much fun. I really have had a great time talking to you all.
Keep getting your gray on!
Warm hugs,
Steven
What a great show… I recently joined GGLG, and am determined to find my
grayt inner self !! Thanks Diana and Steven!
Steven, Thanks for asking for ideas on additional topics. In reading Diana’s intro above, I find her comment especially telling: “We’re now seeing two generations embracing authenticity, both boomers and Gen-Xers,” she says, “and it has to do with so many factors beyond a simple decision to stop coloring.”
Many of the Going Gray Looking Great posts have dealt with these some of these factors: reaction to/desire to avoid harsh chemicals (both on our heads and being washed down the drain into our water supply); saving time and money and putting it to better use elsewhere; disgust with the “stay-’young’ -looking-at-any-cost” mentality; showing younger women how grayt it is to embrace authenticity and a natural look. In other words, delving more deeply into some of the psychological reasons for going gray that many women are embracing.
Many many thanks for hosting Diana, for your respectful approach to a subject often treated with ridicule, and most of all for your sparkling sense of humor. Keep shining on!
Amy…
Awesome suggestions! Spread the word among the other girls. Diana and I are talking about doing another episode that is an exclusive “Call In” show just for you girls. TBA soon.
I’ll add your “GREYT” suggestions to my notes for the show.
Thanks you so much.
Steven
T Hollins,
How kind of you to take the time to post a note. Thank you and Stay tuned!!
Steven
Steven,
I am having a hair dye allergy and I feel miserable. Thanks for helping me make the transition from dark hair to gray. I have no choice and I am very afraid. I want to feel better and I must go gray!! Thanks for taking time to talk about this subject. It is a health issue for me!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
Cathy
Cathy,
It’s my pleasure. I am so happy to hear from you. Be proud to be yourself. Grey is GREYT!
Thank you for your kind message.
