The Truth About Affirmations

The Truth About Affirmations

In the iconic movie Star Wars, the wise, yet gentle Jedi Master “Yoda” reveals all sorts of truths, secrets and wisdom that can only come from years of practice and experience. One of my favorite lines in the movie is:

“[Luke:] I can’t believe it.

[Yoda:] That is why you fail.”

Yoda is right! And this simple truth applies to many things in life. In this video, I answer an email I received from a subscriber on my mailing list about “Affirmations”. She wanted to know if they really work or is it just a bunch of “Hocus-Pocus”.

Simply put, affirmations are repeating a given sentence or an idea over and over in your mind or out loud.

One of the most famous affirmations in history being: “Everyday in every way I am getting better and better” by the French psychologist Emile Coué.

So is this more of that silly “power of positive thinking” stuff? Can it work for you?

If you simply focus on a positive thought, can it truly create change in your life?

Aren’t you just trying to fool your brain?

These questions and more are revealed in this video!

Here are five simple alternatives to affirmations:

1. Relax - Take it easy. Take in some silence. Stop trying to fix (control) everything in life. Let yourself observe the flow of things and simply feel yourself in the midst of it. Be your natural self. Just be.

2. Be Grateful – The most effective affirmation is a simple prayer of gratitude. Especially gratitude for the things you have that you don’t want. That’s right. If you are struggling with lack of anything, give thanks for that. Give thanks – for the good and the bad. As we give thanks for the rain to come, let us also give thanks for the droughts in our lives.

3. Affirm the Truth – about ourselves and our lives without judgment. There is great power in admitting the truth to ourselves. Let your inner conflicts surface and affirm your discoveries. Acknowledge your desire. If you want to truly empower yourself, build on your strengths. This is what the most successful people do.

4. Set Your Goals – your intent. Let your vision unfold. Let yourself see what you would rather be experiencing. See that check in the mail, that healthy body in the mirror, that new love you dream of. Notice what within you conflicts with that dream. This is where so many of us get stuck. Sometimes we don’t realize that we have conflicts with the dream. The dream is like a bouquet. It takes a bit of arranging.

5. Take Action – to change. Give energy to your intent. What would a person do to get to the place that you dream of? Are there actions you are avoiding? Don’t just sit around talking to yourself. Get to work! And be persistent.

Your conscious mind is way too weak to fool the entire psychosomatic system into something that is not even close to you’re own personal truth.

It will help you reprogram your negative thinking into a more positive state of well-being.
Don't be afraid to try it!

Our words can be a significant factor in creating our reality. But words are an outward expression of the being within. In other words... what we truly believe in our hearts.

I have found that, the people who get lasting results are the people who begin change from within. When you truly believe it, and have that emotional connection I spoke about in the video, your outward behavior naturally shifts and you don't have to force it with your words.

It just happens naturally as it should.

Just be.

    Spot on Steven!

I always tell people to use the same “voice” for their affirmations that they use to speak to themselves inside their heads every day. This is the voice that is natural to them and is not “manufactured” by a Guru or set in a context of “wishful thinking”. And so it is highly effective!

In fact, the negative affirmations that we sometimes feed ourselves are ALWAYS in this most natural of voices – because it is YOU speaking to YOU directly! This is also highly effective – but it is not the message we want to believe in!

So to be most effective in rejecting the negative messages and accepting the positive ones we create for ourselves, they have to be in this natural voice. I even advise people that naturally curse a lot, to feel free to do so in their affirmations! It may not sound as elegant, but it will work better for those people!

Thanks again Steven for spreading truth!

This is so true. When you believe it in your heart it works, but the brain knows the truth of your heart. So you can not lie. You can’t fool yourself. That’s stupid. GREAT VIDEO!
