<p align="left">Why, with all this time, money and energy being spent on “self-help”, are so few people actually living the life they really want?</p>

<p align="left"><em>Why are millions of people who&#8217;ve spent so much time and money trying to improve themselves STILL going down the road of life with one foot on the brake?</em></p>
<p align="left">There actually IS an answer to this seemingly unanswerable question. But like most vexing problems, to answer this question, we must first ask a deeper question. The deeper question we need to ask is:</p>
<p align="left">
<h3>What Causes Human Behavior?</h3>
<p align="left">While there may be many ways to answer that question, here’s what I’ve found to be, at once, the simplest and most accurate answer to that question. It’s a simple answer, because I’ve found (and I’m sure you have, too) that the simplest solutions tend to create the best results.</p>
<p align="left">
<p align="left"><strong>The Scales of Success</strong></p>
<p>Picture a <em>balance</em>, like the scales of Justice you’ve seen in one of those courtroom TV shows. It&#8217;s an instrument for determining weight that has a fulcrum at the center, from each end of which is suspended a plate.</p>
<p>On one plate, imagine that we have something called <strong>Your Why-To’s</strong>. These are your internal <strong>motives </strong>or <strong>Reasons Why </strong>to do something. On the other plate, we have <strong>Your Why-Not-To’s</strong> – your internal <strong>Reasons Why Not </strong>to do something.</p>
<p>Let me give you an example from your own life. Why are you reading this article right now? The answer is very simple. You&#8217;re reading this article because <strong><em>you perceive </em></strong>that there are more <strong>Benefits </strong>of reading this (another word for <strong>Why-To’s </strong>is <strong>Benefit</strong>) than <strong>Costs </strong>of doing so (another word for <strong>Why-Not-To’s </strong>is <strong>Cost</strong>).</p>
<p>Your perceived Why-To’s or Benefits<strong> </strong>of reading this article might include:</p>
<p>- I want to learn what the world’s most successful people do, so I can do that in my own life</p>
<p>- So I can stop sabotaging myself</p>
<p>- So I can make more money</p>
<p>- And finally get my foot off the brake</p>
<p>- And this will make me happier, because I can live the life I’ve always wanted</p>
<p>- And quit this job I hate</p>
<p>- And take more vacations</p>
<p>- And have better relationships</p>
<p>- And lose weight</p>
<p>- And find the love of my life</p>
<p>- And buy a new car</p>
<p>- And a new house</p>
<p>- And get out of debt</p>
<p>- Did I mention I’ll finally get my foot off the brake?</p>
<p><strong>What about your Why-Not-To’s or Cost? Those might include:</strong></p>
<p>- I have a million other things I could be doing right now.</p>
<p>- Who is this guy, anyway, and why should I listen to him?</p>
<p>- What if I get to the end and still haven’t learned how to get my foot off the brake?</p>
<p>- What if it works for everyone else, but not for me?</p>
<p>- What’s he trying to sell me? I’ve been burned before and I don’t want it to happen again.</p>
<p>- Did I mention all the other things I could be doing right now?</p>
<p>Your mind is like an infinite weighing machine — every moment, your mind is weighing your <em>perceived Benefit</em> against your <em>perceived Cost</em> of doing any behavior or activity you can think of.</p>
<p><strong>Can you see that every decision we make is built upon our Why-To’s and Why-Not-To’s?</strong></p>
<p>- Where you live</p>
<p>- What you wear</p>
<p>- What you eat (and how often you eat it)</p>
<p>- What kind of car you drive</p>
<p>- What you do for work</p>
<p>- Who you decide to marry — or not marry!</p>
<p>- What you had for breakfast this morning…</p>
<p>All of these were determined by your <strong>Why-To’s </strong>and your <strong>Why-Not-To’s</strong>. In fact, every decision you’ve ever made in your life was based on your internal Why-To’s and Why-Not-To’s: your reasons why you thought you should do the thing vs. the reasons not to do that thing.</p>

I found myself in a series of dead-end jobs: secretary, waiter, clerk; I sold kites, sold sweaters (not at the same store, of course); I even cleaned toilets as a housekeeper. During those long, lean years, two questions burned inside of me:

<p>And I was shocked to see that even though the answer had been right in front of me all along, NOT ONE of the “success gurus” I’d spent so much time, energy and money on had ever mentioned it before.</p>

<p>If ever there was a time in human history when we needed to apply a new level of thinking to create a world we can all live successfully and happily in, it’s now.</p>

<p>Recently, I was in Los Angeles having lunch with some friends who are millionaires and deca-millionaires &#8211; people worth $1 million to $10 million and up.</p>
<p>As I looked around the table, something made me smile. I noticed that none of us looked remarkable in any way. No one was wearing an expensive suit — some of us looked like we were on our way to a pool party. We weren’t discussing anything particularly deep or earth-shattering. I realized that we were really average in every visible way. You would have probably walked right by if you saw any of us on the street.</p>

<p>In my teens and early twenties, I worked as a professional ballet dancer. It was ridiculously hard work for dreadfully little money. The punishment we put on our bodies was comparable to that of a pro football player, except for 1/1,000th of the salary.</p>
<p>One night during a performance, I felt something go “pop” in my left hip. Even after MRIs, X-rays, and physical therapy, none of the “experts” could find what was wrong. I was forced to retire at age 22 and start a new career doing…</p>
<p>But that was the problem. Because I was physically unable to do my job, my livelihood – and the only career I’d ever known – was stripped away from me without my consent. Today, millions of people who are perfectly able to do their jobs now find themselves in a similar position.</p>
<p>Much of the hallway chatter at a recent business conference centered around the economic downturn and how people are responding to it. Yet even the rosiest predictions show that most of the jobs that have been eliminated won’t be coming back. So how do you find a new livelihood after your old one is taken away from you?</p>
<p>It’s vital to remember one thing (that no one told me back then): your livelihood is not your LIFE. For many, their livelihood is more than their sense of worth; it’s their identity. “I am an engineer. I am an author. I’m a doctor.”</p>
<p>What you do for work is not who you are. But because so much of our selves gets wrapped up in our work, the real secret is knowing how to separate your livelihood from your life. But how do we do that?</p>
<p>After my career-ending injury, I crossed the country going from one dead-end job to another. I knew I was looking for something; I just didn’t know what it was.</p>
<p>One night in October 1997, I happened to attend a seminar and had an epiphany that changed my life. I “accidentally” discovered why so many smart, talented people hold themselves back from reaching their full potential – and realized that it was exactly the OPPOSITE of what we were being taught in traditional success programs.</p>
<p>After all those years of wondering and wandering, I finally discovered my purpose on Earth – to teach people the formula to get rid of the head trash that’s holding them back and live a truly rich life. The irony was, I didn’t so much find my new livelihood as much as it found me.</p>
<p>When your livelihood is taken away, you have to fight to get it back, and fight for your sense of self. The problem is, since most of our Systems of Support are created at work, it feels like those get taken away, too.</p>
<p>After the only career I’d ever known was taken away from me, it took me more than eight years to regain my sense of self, find my true purpose, and start getting paid for doing what I love. But you don’t have to take anywhere near that long. That’s because today’s connection tools like Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter give you the tools to build – or rebuild – your Systems of Support faster than ever.</p>
<p>If you’ve lost your job, or are simply trying to reinvent yourself, start with these questions:</p>
<p><strong>What do I really love to do?</strong></p>
<p>Make a list of the Activities you love to do – the things that make you feel strong. Write everything you can think of, from writing to speaking to making trades to meeting new people. The sky’s the limit.</p>
<p>What have other people told me I’m good at?</p>
<p>List what other people have praised you for. You can also interview your friends and ask them what they see your Strengths as being. You may be surprised by their answers!</p>
<p>What VALUE can I bring to other people by doing what I love?</p>
<p>Personally, I would love to get paid for going to the library and reading books all day. The reason they don’t pay me to do that is because it doesn’t provide much VALUE to other people. (Or maybe I just haven’t figured out how to market it yet.)</p>
<p>Remember that people pay money for what they perceive is VALUABLE TO THEM. So you must first figure out how other people will benefit when YOU do what you love.</p>
<p>Who is currently doing what I want to do and getting paid for it?</p>
<p>Now, list the people who are doing what you love to do and are making a living at it. This is your “hit list” of people who have cracked the code of making money doing what you want to do.</p>
<p>Who do I know who might know those people?</p>
<p>This is where the connection tools I was talking about come into play. Today’s connection tools make anyone you could want to meet only a few mouse clicks away. You’d be surprised how accessible even the top people in your industry are. You just have to ASK.</p>
<p>How can I meet and provide Value to those people?</p>
<p>The secret to living a truly rich life comes down to one word: VALUE. The more Value you add to people’s lives, and the more people you add that Value to, the richer your life will be.</p>
<p>It’s true: after one door closes, another one opens… but those hallways can be a bee-atch.</p>
<p>Follow these proven steps and you’ll come out the other side a little wiser… and a whole lot richer!</p>

<p>These are your Why-To’s of Losing Weight. These should be relatively obvious: “I’ll look better, I’ll be healthier, my clothes will fit better, I’ll live longer, I’ll feel sexier.”</p>
<p><strong>2. What will I LOSE by losing weight? </strong></p>
<p>Your Why-Not-To’s of Losing Weight hide in your subconscious. That means, you don’t go around thinking about what you’re going to LOSE when you lose weight; but your Why-Not-To’s are lurking beneath the surface of your consciousness like the bottom of an iceberg. And unbeknownst to you, they’re secretly controlling your behavior.</p>
<p>Many working moms have discovered surprising answers to this simple question, including: “I’ll lose my ability to disappear; I won’t feel safe; I’ll feel vulnerable; I’ll have to buy a new wardrobe; what if my partner/boyfriend/spouse isn’t attracted to the new me; what if my friends are jealous of me?”</p>
<p>That last one can be particularly prickly, because, well, women can be downright mean to each other. You’d think that your friends would support you in your weight loss efforts, right? Try losing 20 pounds in seven weeks like Judy did, and you’ll learn who your REAL friends are (and aren’t).</p>

What I tell my coaching clients who come to me with money worries is that money doesn’t CHANGE anything; it REVEALS everything.

Money acts as a magnifying glass. If you’re a poor jerk, you’ll be a rich jerk – only jerkier. If you’re a broke nice person, you’ll be a rich nice person – only nicer.

And if there are problems simmering beneath the surface in your relationship, those problems will only be exacerbated when money’s tight.

So in these tough financial times, how can we make sure our relationships stay healthy (even if our 401K doesn’t)?

<p>Here are five relationships assumptions working moms need to avoid when money is tight:</p>
<p><strong>1. Assuming money is everything. </strong></p>
<p>It’s true: the best things in life are free. But the mortgage, groceries and Internet service aren’t. We’re hearing stories everywhere about how people are cutting back on non-essentials; but why did it take a financial crisis to do that?</p>
<p>The fact is, if you have to spend money to enjoy each other – and indeed, life – you’re actually facing a deeper issue. We’ve been indoctrinated to believe that “Things = Happiness” and therefore, “If you have more things, you’ll be happier”.</p>
<p>But study after study shows that there’s a point where having more things creates an INVERSE relationship to happiness. That’s why I counsel my clients to take <strong><em>Goal-Free Zones</em></strong> where you walk in nature or work in your garden, because this will help you focus on what you already have, instead of what you don’t.</p>
<p><strong>2. Assuming a change in your money situation won’t affect the relationship. </strong></p>
<p>This is the flip side of the first assumption. Remember: <strong><em>money doesn’t CHANGE anything; it REVEALS everything</em></strong>. Be aware that when you experience a significant change in your money situation, your relationship’s about to change in one way or another.</p>
<p>But the irony is, it will become <em>more of what it already is</em>. If you’re close, you’ll tend to get closer. If there’s a distance, it will become more noticeable. The cure for this is to communicate openly and honestly about what’s happening and what you can do about it.</p>
<p><strong>3. Assuming things will turn around by themselves. </strong></p>
<p>Also known as the Ostrich Syndrome. We’ve all been there: believing that “someone out there” will fix our problems. As FDR said, “When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.”</p>
<p>It’s good to assume that things will be better in the future. The problem comes when we think they’ll get better without us having to do anything.</p>
<p>$20 bills tend to NOT walk down the street, knock on your door and say, “Hey, can I come in?” If they do where you live, I’m moving to where you live! Because on the planet Earth, we have to do this annoying thing called <em>work </em>to get the things we want, like, oh I don’t know… money.</p>
<p>If you know what to do, but just aren’t doing what you know, you can break through that wall by enlisting support, creating an action plan, and taking one step at a time toward what you want. That’s fastest way to overcome the Ostrich Syndrome.</p>
<p><strong>4. Assuming you and your partner look at money the same way.</strong></p>
<p>No assumption causes more arguments than this one. People tend to fall into four behavioral styles with regards to money: The Spender, The Saver, The Avoider and The Monk.</p>
<p>Imagine a Spender and a Saver living together. Now imagine their income just got cut in half. Insert argument here.</p>
<p>There’s no “right or wrong” with regards to how you relate to money, although each style has its pros and cons. Just know what you are and what your partner is, and adjust accordingly.</p>
<p><strong>5. Assuming things will be this way forever. </strong></p>
<p>This is the “Why Bother?” Syndrome, the flip side of the Ostrich Syndrome. When you assume “why bother?”, your actions will be half-hearted (or some other part of your anatomy), which will naturally lead to half-success, or less.</p>
<p>The key is to find the middle ground between the Ostrich Syndrome and the Why Bother Syndrome. This is where Afformations, or empowering questions, have helped many people make better assumptions about life and their relationship to it.</p>
<p>Asking Afformations like, <em>“Why are things getting better?”</em> and <em>“Why did everything work out better than I thought it could?”</em> focuses your mind on positive assumptions, rather than negative ones.</p>
<p>We all have to work to overturn our unconscious assumptions, especially negative ones about money and relationships. But do the work and you’ll reap the rewards of healthier relationships with your partner, your money and yourself.</p>

So I asked myself a logical question: "If the human mind is always asking and searching for the answers to questions, why are we told to repeat positive statements we don't believe? <p>Traditional success teachers have been big advocates of &#8220;affirmations&#8221; &#8211; repeating statements that you&#8217;d like to be true. For example, a classic &#8220;affirmation&#8221; is: &#8220;I am rich.&#8221;<br />
Okay. Try it. Say &#8220;I am rich.&#8221;</p>
<p>What just happened? Did you hear a voice in your head that said: &#8220;Yeah, right!&#8221;?<br />

Take a statement like &#8220;I am rich&#8221; &#8211; to which the brain replies &#8220;Yeah, right!&#8221; What&#8217;s the empowering question you should be asking instead?<br />
That question might look something like this: &#8220;Why am I so rich?&#8221;<br />
Try it. Ask yourself &#8220;Why am I so rich?&#8221;<br />
Do you know what your brain is doing right now? Searching for a positive answer to that question!<br />
The staggering realization I made that morning in April 1997 was that you create your reality in two ways: by the statements you say to yourself and others, and by the questions you ask yourself and others. Until then, no one had fully realized, or shown how to harness, the awesome power of what happens when you change your questions.</p>
<p>I named my discovery <strong>The Afformations Method.</strong><br />
<strong>The 4 Steps to Creating Afformations That Change Your Life</strong></p>
<p><strong>Step 1:</strong> Ask yourself what you want.<br />
You can use a goal you&#8217;ve previously written down, or start from scratch. You decide.<br />
Please note that traditional success teachers stop right here. They tell you to &#8220;set your goals&#8221; and then say &#8220;affirmations&#8221; in an attempt to convince your brain that you will have what you want&#8230; sometime, somehow, somewhere.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s use Brandon from Utah as an example. He wanted to make more money doing something he loved. He was an insurance salesman who&#8217;d spent $30,000 on every &#8220;how to succeed&#8221; program out there, with no results. So for his goal, he wrote: &#8220;I want to be all I can be in life.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, the breakthrough step&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Step 2:</strong> Form a QUESTION that assumes that what you want is already true.</p>
<p>Forming a question that assumes that what you want is already true is the key to creating Afformations that change your life. Your life is a reflection of the subconscious assumptions you make. That&#8217;s why Step 2 of The Afformations Method is to change your communication with the world inside yourself. Afformations are the fastest, most effective way I&#8217;ve ever seen to immediately change your communication with the world inside of you AND the world outside of you.</p>
<p>So Brandon began afforming: &#8220;Why am I allowed to be, do, and have all that I want in life?&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Step 3:</strong> Give yourself to the question.</p>
<p>The point of Afformations is not to find &#8220;the answer&#8221;, but to ask better questions. When you ask better questions, your mind automatically begins to focus on what you have as opposed to what you don&#8217;t have.</p>
<p>Once Brandon began to afform what he wanted, his mind automatically began to search for the answer. He started doing things a little differently and talking to people with new confidence.</p>
<p>Which brings us to Step 4 of The Afformations Method &#8211; the one you MUST do to get optimum results&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Step 4:</strong> Take new ACTIONS based on your new assumptions about life.</p>
<p>Even though Brandon had spent thousands of dollars on every &#8220;how to succeed&#8221; program out there, he subconsciously assumed they wouldn&#8217;t work for him. So they didn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>After learning about Afformations, he realized that this was what was keeping him from what he wanted. So he began to take new action on the very programs that had not worked for him.</p>
<p>He began calling more people. He followed up with more confidence. By focusing on what he had instead of what he lacked, positive results naturally followed.</p>
<p>Once Brandon followed the four steps of The Afformations Method, his sales tripled in 30 days. In less than nine months, his income increased 560 percent and he was named Agent of the Year.</p>
